Leading from Wholeness – Five Heart Questions for  Healthy Leadership

Big Idea:

Leadership begins with the heart. If we want to lead well publicly, we must be whole privately. These five questions will help us realign our leadership with the life, joy, and identity we have in Christ.

1. Am I Fully Present in My Leadership?

Question: What habits or mindsets are preventing you from being fully present in your leadership?
Teaching Point:

  • Distraction is the enemy of connection. Multitasking, constant striving, and insecurity can disconnect us from the moment and from people.
  • Jesus modeled presence — with the Father (Luke 5:16) and with people (John 11:33-35).
  • Practical Application: Practice stillness, Sabbath, and daily rhythms of reflection. Eliminate “hurry” from your schedule.

Scripture: Luke 10:41-42 – “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed…”

2. Am I Carrying Leadership Weary or Well?

Question: When was the last time you felt weary in your leadership? How did you handle it?
Teaching Point:

  • Leadership burnout happens when we carry what we were never meant to bear alone.
  • We must learn to lead from rest, not rush.
  • Jesus invites us into a “light and easy” yoke (Matthew 11:28-30).

Practical Application:

  • Normalize rest. Take regular retreats.
  • Seek counsel or peer groups.
  • Define success by obedience, not output.

3. Is My Identity Rooted in Christ or My Role?

Question: If you lost your leadership position tomorrow, would your identity remain secure in Christ?
Teaching Point:

  • Titles fade. Sonship remains.
  • Insecurity fuels performance-based leadership.
  • Jesus’ identity was declared before He did any public ministry (Matthew 3:17).

Practical Application:

  • Regularly affirm your identity in Christ.
  • Build community around who you are, not what you do.
  • Ask yourself, “Who am I becoming, not just what am I building?”

4. What Am I Neglecting in the Name of Ministry?

Question: What area of your life are you neglecting in the name of “ministry” that God is calling you to restore?
Teaching Point:

  • Neglect is often spiritualized as sacrifice.
  • Ministry should flow from the overflow of a healthy soul (3 John 1:2).
  • Your family, physical health, and personal walk matter deeply to God.

Practical Application:

  • Identify neglected areas and repent.
  • Rebuild rhythms around priorities: God, family, calling.
  • Invite accountability.

5. What Would It Look Like to Lead with Joy and Freedom?

Question: What would it look like for you to lead from a place of true joy and freedom in Christ?
Teaching Point:

  • Joy is a fruit, not a goal. It comes from abiding, not achieving.
  • Leading from freedom means we stop managing image and start multiplying life.
  • Paul’s joy came from knowing Christ and making Him known (Philippians 3:8-10).

Practical Application:

  • Rediscover joy in your relationship with Jesus.
  • Celebrate progress, not just outcomes.
  • Lead with transparency and grace.

Conclusion:

Wholeness precedes fruitfulness. These five questions are not just for reflection — they are for realignment. When leaders lead from a whole heart, churches thrive, people are empowered, and the Gospel advances with integrity.
